Im not photogenic

This is the number one thing I hear from people when I show up to their session. And let me tell you I’m right there with you! I always say I belong on the back of a camera not in front of it but let me tell you something else. Everyone is photogenic, yes that’s right that means YOU are photogenic.

I despise getting in front of the camera but I do it anyway, I know that it is important and one day all my child and future grandchildren will have are the photos that we take today. Do you want to know how I got over the fear and stress that came with thinking I was not photogenic? No? To bad Im gonna tell you anyway ūüėČ

  1. Find a photographer that you really click with someone who makes you forget that there is a camera in their hand. Once I found that it was much easier to get in front of the camera once a year. My photographer makes the whole process fun and we have even become friends outside of our Photographer, Client relationship. This is by far the most important item on this list.
  2. Next is don’t wear brand new clothing as you will not be completely comfortable in it during your session. If you do want new outfits for your portraits purchase them at least a month before the session and wear them. Wear them and wash them that way they loosen up a bit and drape a bit better and you will feel better in them.
  3. Look at yourself in the mirror. Find your relaxed smile and practice it. Also while looking in the mirror practice poses. You can actually find quite a few posing guides on pinterest that will help you learn some of the basic poses that work with your body type. This step even though your photographer will know how to pose you to flatter your body will help you become more comfortable in these poses. Comfort equals relaxed posing and relaxed photos. Relaxed photos always look better than stiff ones.
  4. The last tip is love yourself. I know I know its soooo cliche! But its true!! If you are anything like me and don’t want photos of yourself its because you see all your imperfections. You say things like maybe next year after Ive lost weight, Or please don’t photograph my right side its not my good side . Next time you look in the mirror tell yourself out loud one thing you like about yourself. then repeat every time you look in the mirror. It doesn’t always have to be something physical but should be often as you are trying to train yourself to see the beauty in your physical form.

Simple right? Well maybe not but it does work! Im proof Below are photos of my own un-photogenic self.

Meet Baby Miss A. Newborn Portraits by DellaMort Photography

Baby Miss A really gave me a run for my money while shooting her Newborn Portraits. She wanted nothing to do with the camera and was REALLY not a hat girl. Her mama was so patient though and we prevailed. Eventually she did sleep and we pushed through as many poses as we could. In the end this has become one of my favorite sessions because while it didn’t go exactly as planned it still came out great and showed me that sometimes all it takes is patience.

Fathers Day Surprise Portraits ~ DellaMort Photography Canby Childrens Photographer

This blog is coming a bit late, However I had to share a story that proves sometimes you underestimate children.  About a week before Fathers Day this last June there was a knock at my door, I opened it to find my neighbors daughter, thinking she was here for my daughter I started to tell her that my kiddo was not home. She interrupted me and asked if she could hire me to do photos of her and her brother for fathers day. Of course I said yes , she then pulled out her phone and showed me a photo that she had found on Google saying she wanted to do something similar for her dad. We scheduled the day and she got her brothers mom in on the plan so that she could stay the night and her brothers mom would bring them to the photo session. By that time she had bought some letters  DAD of course, and a frame for the photos and we set to work.

I am very touched by the thoughtfulness of this little girl. She saved her money to be able to get something her dad would truly enjoy and did it all without him knowing which is a feat in and of itself considering he is a single father and she lives with him!

The below portrait is the end result which she put in the frame she purchased and presented to him on Fathers day.

Audreys Senior Photos with DellaMort Photography a Portland Oregon Photographer

I had a lot of fun shooting Audreys senior photos last month. We spent an hour or so at Oxbow Regional Park outside of Portland Oregon. This park has so many different photography opportunities from little meadows to a sandy beach on the river. I think Audrey and I spent more time laughing than shooting photos and we got so many great images I had a hard time Narrowing it down for her gallery.  Here is a small sample of Audreys gallery Enjoy!

Baby Miss A’s Newborn Portraits ~ DellaMort Photography Portland Newborn Photographer

I am so excited that I was chosen to take this adorable little ones newborn photos. She us such an amazing baby and so easy to work with.¬† I had so much fun with her mom and grandma, both were willing to help or just sit back and watch and were so relaxed which really helps with a newborn since they can sense tension. On top of the amazing family¬† I’m not sure how I did it but I managed to choose the exact colors of her nursery, when I was choosing what props to bring with the night before! When I walked into her room I was just in Awe. You can see the love these parents have for their beautiful baby girl in the detail of her room. I really wanted to do a lifestyle type shoot at that point but alas this is not my style and not what I am practiced at so I stuck with my plan and could not be happier with the results! I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed taking and editing them.Newborn and Family Photography

Modern Aphrodite Styled Photoshoot ~ DellaMort Photography in Canby Oregon

I have been working on a concept for a styled photo shoot for over a year now. I am very excited to present to you my modern take on Aphrodite.  For this photo session I had two looks. The first was a more vintage classic Aphrodite look with a blush dress that hinted at a toga. For the second look I wanted a more modern take on the look so I put my model in a flowy white tank and darker skinny jeans.  For both the looks I had a beautiful floral crown and bouquet provided by Giffords Flowers In Portland Oregon.  We had a great day taking these photos, we started at Molalla River state park  with the first look and then Headed down to one of the local swimming holes for the second look. My model was amazing and did her own make up and then I did her hair. I hope you enjoy looking at these photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.

If you would like to see more of my work please check out my Facebook page or Deviant Art Profile, I am also available on G+.

J and J’s Maternity Photos with DellaMort Photography Portland Oregon Maternity Photographer

When Joanna contacted me to do her maternity portraits you could say I was a little excited. The location that she wanted to use was one of my favorites and she wanted to do an evening shoot which meant BEAUTIFUL golden light. We met up and in true me fashion I introduced myself and asked their names¬† and¬† made sure to tell them I am horrible with names (starting the session off with a laugh at my expense ūüôā )¬† we started out in front of a small waterfall and on the stone stairs that lead down the near the Oregon City elevator and then worked our way back up to the yard at the Mclaughlin House. I then made the suggestion that we use our remaining time to go over to the Promenade and I am quite happy that they said yes! The light on the bluff was even more amazing! I hope you enjoy these photos of this glowing mama to be and amazing daddy to be as much as I enjoyed taking them!
